Guide to Bargain Hunting: The Basic Rules

The basic rules in the antiques business as they say are quality/quality/quality. But if you’re dealing with collectables and bric-a-brac applying these rules isn’t so easy. So if you’re budget doesn’t stretch that far go for items that are quirky and unusual.
- When you start buying antiques and collectables forget about making a profit. Buy something that your eyes find appealing and you want to live with. As a general rule of thumb, if you like it, the chances are that someone else will like it.
- Go out there and start to learn. Use your eyes and build up your knowledge. Go to local outdoor fairs and salesrooms. Get your eye in, follow your own judgement, and start to build up your confidence.
- The more pieces you buy and sell the more you will hone your taste. But be yourself and buy what you like and don’t be affected by other people’s tastes. You will make mistakes but the idea is to limit those mistakes.
- Always buy the best examples of what you can find and what you can afford.
- Use your flair and imagination. Architectural salvage is a very exciting area. Get out to the salvage yards where you’ll find all kinds of objects that can be brought indoors. Also church pews/cornices/carved oak woodwork may provide you with fantastic interior solutions.
